About Me

Turning complexity into clarity through product design.

I'm Joi Arnaiz, product designer based in Montevideo, Uruguay,

with 15+ years of experience creating thoughtful, human-centered digital products. I bring clarity, structure, and a collaborative mindset to every project, with expertise spanning product strategy, UX research, interaction design, and visual systems. I lead with empathy, mentor designers, and help teams make confident, informed decisions while building scalable design systems and shaping product direction.

I’m also the co-creator of UX United, a course that helps cross-functional teams understand the value of UX and collaborate more effectively. We teach that anyone can “wear the UX hat,” fostering better decisions and stronger alignment between design, product, QA, and engineering. It’s a perspective I bring into every project I work on.

Work experiences

Over the past 17 years, I’ve collaborated with companies of all sizes, leading design across platforms, industries, and product lifecycles. Each role strengthened my ability to turn complex problems into clear, scalable solutions.

Design philosophy

How i think through every design decision.

User-centered decision making

I base every decision on real user needs, ensuring the product remains meaningful, intuitive, and grounded in evidence.

Clarity in direction & communication

I communicate design decisions clearly, explaining the “why,” aligning expectations, and helping teams move with confidence and focus.

Iteration as a mindset

I see design as a continuous cycle of refinement. Feedback and iteration help uncover better solutions and guide the product forward.

Collaboration that elevates ideas

I believe great products come from diverse perspectives. Working closely with cross-functional teams helps refine ideas and strengthen the final outcome.

Design process

My ideal approach to product design.

Research | Meet the users

I start by defining what the team needs to learn: comparable cases, proven approaches, and how people behave in similar contexts. Through desk research and competitive analysis, I gather insights that help bring clarity and direction to the project from the very beginning.

01.

Empathize | “Be” the users

Empathy is the foundation of meaningful design. I focus on listening and understanding users through interviews, observations, and artifacts like personas, empathy maps, scenarios, and storyboards. These tools help the team see the product through the users’ eyes and align around what truly matters.

02.

Ideation | Explore possibilities

Once the problem is clear, I guide the exploration of different directions and concepts. Sometimes I sketch, sometimes I write ideas down, what matters is generating enough options to compare, discuss, and refine with the team. This stage sets the foundation for informed decisions.

03.

Prototyping | Make it tangible

Here ideas become real. Depending on the project, I create flows, low-fidelity sketches, or quick paper prototypes to explore interactions early. When needed, I move into digital prototypes using tools like Figma or Framer to simulate realistic experiences the team can evaluate and test.

04.

Testing | Validate with users

This phase reveals how well the solution works in practice. By observing how users interact with the prototype, I validate assumptions, uncover usability issues, and guide the team toward improvements. Testing ensures decisions are based on real behavior, not guesswork.

05.

Iteration | Improve and refine

With insights from testing, I refine the design and push it forward. Iteration helps strengthen the solution, align the team around user needs, and prepare the product for implementation. It’s a continuous cycle of learning and improving together.
